Earth and sky
Shamakhi is not only a city but the generous land of Shirvan: vineyards and orchards, mountain villages and one of the clearest skies in Azerbaijan.
A mild climate and mountain slopes long made Shamakhi a land of winemaking. And the clear mountain air brought astronomers here.
The Land
Shamakhi's blessed climate is ideal for viticulture, and winemaking has developed here for centuries. The district's mountain villages are famed for their orchards, vineyards and hospitality.
All around are the picturesque slopes of the Greater Caucasus, cool springs and old villages where life flows unhurried.

The Land
In the mountains near Shamakhi, on Pirgulu, stands the Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory — one of the leading astronomical centres of the Caucasus. The clear dark sky here is ideal for watching the stars.
So Shamakhi joins the earthly and the celestial: the grapevine on the slopes and the distant stars above the peaks.
